If I could give zero stars, I would. The entire utility department in Lumberton has the most disrespectful, unprofessional, and ignorant people I've ever come in contact with. Every time I have to contact the department via telephone, I get transferred 17 times to still be left without a resolution. Physically meeting with them is even worse! My utility bill for two people for the month of February 2017 is close to $700. When I went to speak with someone about this, I received nothing more than rude comments and even some unprofessional bantering. How could my bill be $700 for one month you ask? According to Lumberton city "workers", I am being back billed for the past 5 months worth of meter reading that they NEVER obtained! Why didn't they get these readings? The response I was given was this: "if they can't find the meter, they estimate a reading." ARE YOU JOKING?!? Therefore, of course I asked why the workers didn't ask me (the homeowner) where the meter was. The response: "that's not our responsibility to inform the homeowners." WHAT?! But you can bill me $700 worth of services for 5 months that I've already paid? 5 months from now would be starting October 2016. Hurricane Matthew hit October 4, 2016, and I couldn't return to work until October 27, 2016 due to water/sewage contamination. Therefore, from October to now I have used 150,000 MORE than what I already paid for each month worth of water and sewage? How is that possible when we had ZERO water and electricity for a month? And yet I still paid a bill for that month without question. Then there's Frank. I assume he's one of the "workers". He walked right into my closed fence without speaking to myself other than to ask if my dog was back there. He then proceeded to tell me that he's been working in this field for 17 years and, "you're GOING to pay it." EXCUSE ME? You've been working in this field 17 years and yet you still haven't grasped the concept of professionalism or the duties of YOUR job since apparently it's MY job to go behind the "workers" to read my own meters and ensure it's correct. WHAT A JOKE! If you're thinking about moving in city limits, DON'T.

This water department charges a reconnect fee at a higher percentage than loan sharks or predatory lendors. Both are illegal, so why isn't this? I will find out!!

For the month of December 2016 our water bill is $106.00 and it states we used over 24,000 gallons of water. Our water bill for November 2016 was $33.16 and states we used 2800 gallons of water. When I called to inquire, Ashley the attendant states that I was not the only one complaining. I then asked her what was the water department going to do if I was not the only one complaining. Ashley stated that they were going to do nothing. She then attempted to transfer me to the supervisor and failed several times. Ashley then took my name and number to relay to the supervisor to return my call. This was last Wednesday, still no call back from supervisor. Customer service: TERRIBLE. NO STARS FOR THE WATER DEPARTMENT.

Get with the times!! Allow auto pay, or at least have your own pay system so we aren't charged a third party fee to pay online, every time.
